Okay, today's post is not going to blow anyone out of the water creatively but I wanted to try a new technique that I saw in a video by makeup artist Jordan Liberty. He loves using a mixture of gloss and rose salve to give eyes a sexy shine for photoshoots and I thought why not try it out myself. This look is definitely a lot more fun to wear than it is to take pictures of and I'll admit it is a BITCH to take off but there's something so sexy about wearing a glossy eye. I think it's the fact that it's a bit messy and very daring, especially when you do it in bold, summery colors. Don't you agree?

Word of advice though, and I cannot stress this enough, if you try this look you MUST use a waterproof base and a waterproof gel liner or your hardwork will crease and smudge and run and you'll end up looking more swamp monster than supermodel. Okay!? You've been warned! Now, onto the pictures and tutorial!

I also filmed a tutorial for this look. It's quick, easy, uses cheap products and it's great for beginners. What more could you want in a video really!? I'm just being modest though ... enjoy and let me know if you decide to try this out for yourself.

Okay, this is a REALLY short post that's basically just some screen caps and a link but

Here's a screencap of the episode online! It's an atrocious freeze frame but holy hell, that's ME!!! They were talking about how hair chalking is a huge trend and then they showed a compilation of myself and three other beauty bloggers doing chalking videos. How absolutely random and cool is that!? Okay, maybe just cool for me but .... AHHH! WTF! So weirdly amazing! Someone on the GMA research staff is a Pigments and Palettes fan, and that person is my new best friend! <3

Here is the original video for those who have not seen it or don't know what I'm talking about:

Now, excuse me while I FREAK OUT!!!!!!!!!!

Special thanks to one of my oldest and best friends, Catherine (and her mom) who informed me about this miraculous happening! Love you both and love all y'all. Today is a good day! I hope everyone is having a spectacular Tuesday, too!

Edited to add: My blog is turning 1-years old in a month! I want to host a big give away to show my gratitude to you all, so leave me suggestions of what kinds of things you'd like to win! Poll on right hand side of blog!

Hey everyone. So today's post is different than usual but I'm really proud of the work that I've included. This year was my second time doing makeup for the Awearness Fashion Performance put on by the Conestoga College Visual Merchandising class. This is the program that my boyfriend graduated from last year and I did the makeup for his model. This year my good friend Michelle was in the program and so she asked me to return and help out with the show. I was there for two days and I don't even want to know how many hours of makeup I must have done. One day it was 10am - 7pm with almost no breaks. I did about 7 different looks in total and unfortunately I don't have pictures for all of them, but I do have five to show off.

Emotion: Confidence
Emotion: Anger

Emotion: Greed

Emotion: Anger & Anxiety
Emotion: Joy & Happiness
Each look was designed to match the model's outfit which was created by the students and meant to embody both an emotion and an element or principal of design.

I was definitely rushed and wished I could have spent a LOT more time on each of these but I did what I could in the time provided. I definitely don't know how the makeup artists at fashion week do it! I'll take a lazy afternoon of one makeup look over 7 looks in seven hours any day! Whew!! Let me know what you guys think of the looks, which ones are your favorite etc!

Congrats to the graduating class of 2012! All the best to you guys and thanks for having me!

Welcome to the April installment of my blogger of the month series. Each month I will be recognizing and featuring someone who I believe to be a true talent in the beauty blogging world. For this monthly feature I have included an interview as well as a gallery of their best work. And, as a special treat, I have commissioned an exclusive look for the monthly 'Pigments & Palettes Challenge'. The next blogger I've decided to feature is:

Sonja is a very talented blogger and artist, but what I admire about her most is her infallibly positive and loving spirit. She's a young mother with a beautiful family and even though she just found out she has colon cancer at only age 26 she has never wavered once. She's as strong as ever, already calling herself a survivor. She's got such courage and grace in the face of something that would destroy most people and she's still creating stunning looks even going through chemo! I hope someday I can have her kind of character. To learn more about Sonja's condition and colon cancer awareness please read her special post here. Now, on to the interview!!

What does your blog name mean, and how did you come up with it?
Well, I've always considered myself to be kind of the girl next door, you know, just your average girl.  And I wanted to somehow add in the fact that it's about beauty and makeup so I figured I'd call it the Beautiful Life of the Girl Next Door.

What do you like the most and the least about being a beauty blogger?
If I'm being completely honest here, my favorite part is probably being sent new products (especially products from small, indie brands) to try out and review.  I really enjoy seeing what kind of products people are putting out and letting my followers know about them, good or bad.  The part I like least is probably still feeling like I should post even when I'm in a rut.  When I'm stuck with nothing creative or even pretty to post, I still feel like I should post whatever looks I come up with.
What are the three most important things for people to know about you?
1.  My family means everything to me.
2.  I'm honest.  I'm not going to tell you I like something if I don't.
3.  In a few months I'm going to be a cancer survivor.  Right now I'm going through chemotherapy but just you wait a few months when it's all over, I'll be a survivor.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
That I love animals as much as I like makeup.  We have a house full of lizards.  And two dogs (pit bulls to be exact).

Describe your beauty philosophy in a six word sentence
When in doubt wear smokey eyes!

What would you say is most unique/different about your blog & looks?
This is a tough question.  Well, I have to say that I feel like the looks I do aren't boring, yet are attainable.  Sometimes I look at blogs and the makeup people do (ahem Meredith) and the looks are so beautiful that I think, 'I could never do that!' but hopefully people look at my blog and think, 'hey, I could do that!'.  That would make me happy if people looked at what I do and got inspired and tried it.

If you could design a makeup look for anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
Haha I've never actually thought about this before but I'm going with Ru Paul.  I did drag makeup on myself at Halloween and I stinkin loved doing it.

Ru would definitely be proud of Sonja's dragtastic makeup!
What's your biggest personal success so far (blogging or otherwise)?
Gosh these are hard questions.  I think my biggest personal successes are my personal relationships.  I know this is a weird answer but I have some incredible relationships, my strongest being my marriage.  My husband and I are really close and we rarely fight.  We're really good at telling each other how we feel without getting defensive, which is something I'm realizing is very rare.  I'm very lucky.

What was the first look you ever posted and what do you think of it now?
My first look was one I posted on Makeup Geek for an NBA team challenge.  I look back at the first few looks on there and wonder what the heck I was doing with my editing.  I edited the colors too much.  The look itself isn't horrible but I know I could do WAY better now!

What's one question you want to ask to next month's Blogger of the Month?
What makeup techniques are still tricky for you?

If you'd never discovered makeup has a hobby/interest what would you have replaced it with instead? - Toria, BotM (March)
Probably jewelry making.  I've never done it but it interests me.

For Sonja's Palette of the Month Challenge, she received the following color scheme
And here's the look she came up with!

Thanks Sonja for your fabulous interview!! Please check out her blog and send her lots of love as she goes through her most recent round of chemo. Love you Sonja!!

Well guys, I have some good news and some bad news. I always say start with the bad news first so here goes. Unfortunately I'm going to have to cut my 'Spring into Color' series a bit short. I was really hoping to get through all ten looks but I have SO many upcoming looks for other collaborations/series/etc to get to that I just wont have time to do looks for each color. The good news is: Today's look combines two of the remaining three colors in the series so all in all I'm only missing one color. More good news, today's look comes with a tutorial and not one but two inspiration boards! All is well that ends well!

Provocative Tangerine Tango, an enticing juicy orange, is a vivacious and appealing refresher to enliven anyone's outlook this spring. Providing a jolt of energy, Solar Power radiates warmth and cheer. Together they are a colorful tour de force and I can't think of any two colors that scream summer more than these two. They are literally the color of the sun - and so that was the inspiration for my final look: a fiery, early morning sunrise over the ocean. Though, the more I look at it, the more I feel this look is the lovechild of two previous looks: My Green & Gold Tyrell look and my recent Driftwood creation.

The shining gold center is my favorite part of this look. It's a combination of my tried and true Annabelle Mineral Dust Pigment in Solar and my recently aquired Goldilux loose pigment from Sugarpill. I got Goldilux after winning the Makeupbee & Sugarpill Bee Colorful competition (still can't believe it!!!) and I have to say, of all the things they so generously sent me Goldilux was my absolute favorite. I've been lusting after Goldilux for months now and I can't get enough.  Here's a swatch for those of you who aren't familiar:

I die!!! This is the gold standard in gold eye shadows as far as I'm concerned. I just want to BATHE in the stuff. But I won't ... yet.

If you're feeling summery yourself and want to try this look, I've gone ahead and filmed a tutorial. I hope you like it as much as I liked wearing it and creating it. I'll leave you with a link to the video and some summery inspired image boards for outfits. Enjoy!!

Well, I guess this concludes another Pantone Color trend series. I had a lot of fun with this, so I hope you guys did too. Let me know if this is a series you like to see and whether or not I should repeat it again in the fall. Your opinions mean the world to me! Stay tuned for tons of really exciting posts in the coming weeks. Lots of collaborations, reviews, tutorials, personal updates and much more. I can't wait!

HELLO! I've missed you guys!! It's been so long since I've been able to blog and I really miss it. I do apologize for my absence as of late. I'm in my last month of school right now, just finished a four week teaching practicum, was volunteering at a charity fashion show and just started working two new jobs (PHEW!). I've been a busy busy bee lately and whenever that happens my makeup blog always seems to suffer. But I'm back (temporarily) with a look that might not be my best or craziest, but it's really special to me. Today I wore all pink makeup for Pink Day!

For those of you who don't know about the cause, today is Pink Day in Canadian Schools. It's all about raising awareness about bullying - especially homophobic bullying - in schools by wearing pink and talking about the importance of acceptance and tolerance. As someone with strong ties to the Queer community I feel especially passionate about promoting schools as a safe space for queer and questioning youth so today I visited a school that I recently taught at to visit the GSA and show my support for their cause. SO, long story short, I decided the best way to be festive was to don bright, beautiful pink makeup with lots of sparkle and shine! Isn't that right, Karen?

Couldn't have said it better myself!

If you want to know more about the cause please visit the Day of Pink website and find out about how you can support this incredibly important cause. And don't forget to go see the new movie Bully, coming out this Spring.

Remember: If you see something, say something! Be strong, stand up and don't stand by. You have the power to prevent hate, everyday.
